As the seconds ticked by, a tense silence gripped the room. Brendan’s earlier bravado faded into confusion as he whispered to Jessica, trying to maintain his composure. Diane continued to sip her wine, though her eyes occasionally flicked towards me with a hint of curiosity.
I sat there, feeling the chill of the water seep through my clothes, but my mind was elsewhere. I thought about the years I had spent quietly building my company from the ground up. I had hidden my accomplishments from Brendan and his family, preferring to keep my personal life separate from my business empire. They saw me only as Brendan’s wife, someone who was supposedly dependent on their largesse. They underestimated me.
A chime from my phone disrupted my thoughts. I glanced at the screen. Arthur had already begun executing the protocol. By now, the board members would be in an emergency conference call, and Brendan’s family would soon receive emails notifying them of the freeze on their shares and access to company resources. They would find their emails inaccessible, their credit cards declined, and their stock options suspended.
While they may have felt entitled to the world because of their wealth, they were about to learn it was all built on the foundation of my work. They thought they tolerated me, but it was I who had tolerated them.
Brendan tried to regain control. “Cassidy, enough with the theatrics. This isn’t funny.”
I met his gaze without flinching. “It’s not a joke, Brendan. I own the company where you and your family work. You think I’m a burden, but the truth is, everything you have is tied to me.”
His face fell as the realization hit him. I watched Diane’s expression change from haughty arrogance to disbelief as she quickly scrolled through her phone, undoubtedly seeing the email notification that confirmed my words. Jessica looked bewildered, glancing between us as though hoping someone would shout “surprise” and tell her it was all a prank.
“Cassidy, how could you do this?” Diane finally sputtered, anger and fear mingling in her voice.
“You’ve all mocked me, belittled me, and treated me as if I were nothing,” I replied. “I never wanted to resort to this; all I ever asked for was respect. But now I’ve taken what’s rightfully mine.”
Brendan opened his mouth to protest, but I cut him off. “You made your choices, Brendan. You let them treat me this way. You laughed as they humiliated me. Now, you’ll see that actions have consequences.”
Jessica stood abruptly, her chair scraping against the floor. “This is insane! You can’t…”
“Oh, but I can,” I interrupted. “And I have.”
The room was silent except for the ticking of the wall clock. The power dynamic had shifted, and they knew it. I stood up slowly, the water from my clothes forming a small puddle around my feet.
“I’ll be leaving now,” I said, my voice steady. “You’ve taken enough of my time. Consider this a lesson in humility.”
As I walked away, I felt a sense of liberation wash over me. I was free from the chains of their disdain and judgment. The future was mine to shape, and I would no longer be silenced or sidelined. For the first time in years, I felt truly in control of my destiny.
