As Thomas pulled into the driveway of his ex-wife’s house, he jumped out of the car, his mind racing and heart pounding with fear and frustration. He banged on the front door, desperately hoping someone would answer. The eeriness of the silent house only amplified his anxiety. With no time to lose, he grabbed the spare key hidden beneath the flower pot and unlocked the door, bursting inside.
The house was eerily quiet, save for the faint sounds of cartoons playing on the television in the living room. His heart sank as he called out, “Ethan! Lily!” There was no response, only the distant echo of children’s voices from the TV.
Thomas rushed through the house, his panic mounting. He found Ethan in the living room, clutching a worn teddy bear, his eyes wide with fear and exhaustion. The little boy’s face was streaked with tears, his small body visibly trembling. Thomas knelt down and hugged his son tightly, then gently pulled back to look him in the eye.
“Ethan, where’s Lily?” Thomas asked urgently.
Ethan pointed towards the bedroom, his tiny finger shaking. “In there, Dad. She won’t wake up. I’ve been trying, but…”
Thomas’s heart clenched as he raced to the bedroom. He pushed the door open and found Lily lying on the bed, her small frame curled up under a thin blanket. She looked so peaceful, almost as if she were simply lost in a dream. But the unnatural stillness of her body told a different story.
He approached her quietly, afraid of what he might find. Gently, he touched her forehead, finding it cold to the touch. The realization hit him like a tidal wave, knocking the wind out of him. His sweet little girl was gone.
Tears blurred his vision as he turned back to Ethan, who was hovering at the door, looking lost and scared. “I tried to wake her, Dad. I tried,” Ethan said, his voice barely a whisper as he clutched the teddy bear tighter.
Thomas gathered Ethan into his arms, holding him close as they both cried. “It’s okay, buddy. It’s okay. I’m here now,” he murmured, though he knew nothing was truly okay.
His thoughts turned dark as he realized the gravity of the situation. How could Emily leave their children alone for days? What had happened to her? The anger and confusion built within him, but he pushed it aside, focusing instead on what needed to be done.
He called emergency services, his voice shaking as he explained the situation. He then dialed his parents to let them know what happened, asking them to come over immediately to help.
As they waited for help to arrive, Thomas stayed by Ethan’s side, whispering words of comfort, though his own heart was in pieces. He couldn’t shake the guilt that gnawed at him for not being there sooner, for not knowing that his children needed him.
The events of that day changed Thomas’s life forever. He vowed never to let his children out of his sight again, to protect Ethan with everything he had left. Emily’s disappearance remained a mystery, but for Thomas, the only priority now was his son and the promise he made to cherish every moment they had together.
