“My husband had just left for a business trip when my six-year-old daughter whispered, ‘Mommy…

The hair on the back of my neck stood up as the voice outside whispered my name again. It was a soft, almost coaxing sound, like someone trying to call a pet. My heart pounded in my chest, so loud I wondered if Lily could hear it too.

“Lily, stay close,” I murmured, inching her behind me as we both backed away from the door. She clutched the back of my shirt, her tiny hands shaking like leaves in the wind.

I glanced at the kitchen window, half-expecting a face to appear. The curtains barely moved. Outside, the gray morning wrapped itself around our house like a shadow, and the little flag on our porch hung still as stone.

“Mommy, who is it?” Lily whispered, her voice tiny and afraid.

I shook my head, trying to convey calmness I didn’t feel. “I don’t know, sweetheart. But we’re going to be okay.”

The voice outside stopped. Silence wrapped around us, thick and heavy. I looked at the back door, considering our options. The car keys were in the kitchen. The garage was a straight shot if we moved quickly.

“I’m going to check the back,” I said softly, praying Lily wouldn’t cry out.

I took her trembling hand and we moved quietly toward the kitchen. Each step felt like walking on glass. The world seemed to hold its breath, waiting for something to break the fragile stillness.

We reached the kitchen, and I grabbed the car keys from the counter. As I turned, I caught sight of a figure through the window—dark and indistinct, standing near the edge of our backyard. I froze, my grip tightening on the keys.

“Mommy?” Lily’s voice was barely a breath against my ear.

“We’re going to the car, honey,” I said, trying to infuse my words with the strength I wished I had. “Remember our game? The one where we move like ninjas?”

Her nod was quick. “Ninja quiet,” she whispered back, her eyes wide.

We crept to the back door, my pulse racing with every step. I could almost feel the weight of the silence pressing down on us as I reached for the door handle.

A sudden noise shattered the quiet—a loud bang from the front of the house. Lily jumped, her grip tightening on my hand, and my heart leapt into my throat. The sound was followed by a scraping noise, like something heavy being dragged across the porch.

I swallowed hard, fighting the urge to panic. “Okay, change of plans,” I said, my voice firmer than I felt. “We’re going to go back upstairs, okay? Just until it’s safe.”

“What about the car?” Lily asked, her voice scared but surprisingly steady.

“We’ll get to the car soon, I promise,” I replied. “First, we just need a better plan.”

We moved quickly, retracing our steps back through the kitchen and into the hallway. I kept one ear trained on the strange noises outside, praying we wouldn’t hear the sound of footsteps approaching the door.

Once we reached the stairs, I glanced back at the front door. My heart skipped a beat as I saw the doorknob turn slightly, as if someone was testing it again.

“Go, Lily,” I urged, nudging her up the stairs.

She moved faster than I’d ever seen, her little feet barely making a sound on the carpeted steps. I followed, my mind racing with possibilities.

We reached the top of the stairs and hurried into my bedroom, closing the door softly behind us. I locked it, hoping it would be enough to keep us safe while I figured out what to do next.

“Mommy, what’s happening?” Lily asked, her eyes wide with fear and confusion.

I pulled her close, hugging her tight. “I don’t know yet, sweetie. But we’re going to be okay. I promise.”

As I held her, I realized we needed help. My phone felt heavy in my pocket, a tether to the outside world. I had to call someone—anyone who could help us understand what was happening.

But for now, we were safe. Together, we would figure this out.
