Harlan Voss’s eyes bore into mine, assessing me with a mix of suspicion and curiosity. Despite the chaos, his presence had a commanding calmness that made everyone else seem even more frantic. The swarm of men in dark coats worked swiftly around us, checking Belle’s vitals and setting up medical equipment as if they had rehearsed this drill a hundred times before.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart. “Is she going to be okay?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Harlan nodded, his gaze softening just a fraction. “She’ll be in good hands,” he assured me, his tone surprisingly gentle given his reputation. He turned away to confer with one of the medics, leaving me kneeling on the cold, hard ground.
A man in a crisp black suit approached me, handing me a small blanket. “You should cover yourself,” he said, gesturing to my shivering form. “It’s freezing out here.”
I hadn’t even noticed the chill settling into my bones as I focused on Belle, but now the cold hit me with full force. I wrapped the blanket around my shoulders, grateful for the warmth.
After what felt like an eternity, Belle was carefully lifted onto a stretcher and loaded into one of the SUVs. Harlan approached me once more, his expression unreadable.
“You did a brave thing,” he said. “You saved my daughter.”
I shook my head. “I just found her,” I replied, unsure of how to respond to his gratitude.
“Not everyone would have stopped,” he said, his eyes serious. “For that, I owe you.”
I wasn’t sure what to say. I had only done what I hoped anyone else would have done in my place. But as I watched the SUVs pull away, leaving the garage eerily silent, I wondered what this unexpected encounter would mean for my life.
The world felt different now, as if some invisible thread had tied my fate to that of Harlan Voss and his daughter. I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something much larger than myself.
I stood alone in the garage, the events of the night replaying in my mind like a movie I couldn’t pause. My thoughts were interrupted by the buzz of my phone—a message from a number I didn’t recognize.
“Thank you, Rue. We’ll be in touch.”
I stared at the screen, a mix of apprehension and intrigue swirling in my chest. Harlan Voss was not a man to ignore, and I had a feeling that whatever lay ahead, it was going to change everything.
As I made my way out of the garage and into the icy Detroit night, I couldn’t help but wonder: What would happen next? One thing was certain—this story was far from over.
