The next few moments felt like a blur. Lucas stood frozen, his face turning pale. The reality of the situation seemed to finally register with him. He had trusted Dad, believed everything would work out just because Dad said so. But now, with the responder reaching for his radio, things were getting serious.
“Lucas,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady, “this isn’t just about the SUV. It’s about trust, respect, and understanding boundaries.”
Lucas opened his mouth, but no words came out. He looked overwhelmed, like a child caught in a lie. I almost felt sorry for him, but the anger and betrayal were too fresh.
The responder relayed the situation into his radio, explaining the fraudulent transfer and the invalid license. I could hear the faint crackle as the dispatcher confirmed they were sending another unit to assist.
As the minutes ticked by, a small crowd began to gather at the edge of the parking lot. People whispered and pointed, curiosity mixing with the after-dinner chatter from the nearby restaurant. I could feel my cheeks burning, but I stood my ground.
Soon, another patrol car arrived. Two officers stepped out, and after a quick briefing from the responder, they approached Lucas. One officer asked him to step aside to discuss the situation, while the other approached me.
“Ms. Elina, we’ll need your statement and to verify these documents,” he said, gesturing to the papers still spread out on the hood of the SUV.
I nodded, retrieving my driver’s license and other identification from my purse. “I’ll do whatever you need,” I replied, grateful that the situation was being handled professionally.
As I gave my statement, I noticed Lucas being escorted to the side, where he started to explain his version of events. His voice was low, and I couldn’t catch his words, but his gestures were animated, as if trying desperately to convince them it was all a misunderstanding.
Meanwhile, my phone buzzed again. It was Dad. I hesitated before answering, but finally picked up, determined not to let him intimidate me.
“You’ve really done it this time, Elina,” he said, his voice a mix of anger and disbelief. “Why couldn’t you just let it go?”
I took a deep breath. “Dad, this isn’t about the SUV anymore. It’s about what’s right. You forged my name, and Lucas drove without a license. There are consequences.”
“You always were ungrateful,” he muttered before hanging up abruptly.
I put my phone away, feeling the weight of his words but also a strange sense of liberation. For the first time, I had stood up not just for my property, but for myself.
As the officers wrapped up their investigation, one of them approached me again. “Ms. Elina, we’ll ensure your brother is dealt with appropriately. As for the SUV, it’s yours to take home tonight.”
“Thank you,” I said, relief washing over me.
Lucas was still speaking with the officers as I climbed back into the driver’s seat of my SUV. The familiar smell of the leather interior felt comforting, like reclaiming a piece of my life that had been momentarily taken away.
I started the engine, ready to leave, but paused for a moment. Lucas caught my eye through the side mirror, and I offered him a small nod. Not of forgiveness, but of understanding. Maybe one day he would realize the impact of his actions.
As I drove out of the parking lot, the neon lights blurring past, I knew this wasn’t the end.
