My husband was brought to the hospital after nearly passing out at work. I arrived

As Dana stood in the doorway, the tension in the room was palpable. My mind raced with thoughts and questions, but I held back. I didn’t want to make a scene, at least not yet. Declan’s eyes were filled with a mix of guilt and helplessness, and Dana looked like she wanted to melt into the walls.

I took a deep breath. “Dana, can I speak with my husband alone for a moment?”

She nodded, leaving the charger and glasses on the bedside table. “I’ll be right outside,” she said softly, glancing at Declan before leaving the room.

I turned to Declan, trying to keep my voice steady. “What is going on, Declan?”

He sighed heavily, looking away. “I know this looks bad, but it’s not what you think.”

“Then tell me what it is. Because from where I’m standing, it seems like you’ve been keeping a lot from me.”

He hesitated, and I saw the conflict in his eyes. “Dana is just a friend, Maris. Someone I work closely with. After the first episode, she was there to help. That’s why I listed her as my emergency contact.”

“Why not tell me? Don’t I deserve to know when something like this happens?”

He rubbed his temples. “I didn’t want to worry you. You have enough on your plate with your own work.”

“That’s not your decision to make, Declan. We’re partners. Or at least, I thought we were.”

The silence that followed was heavy. Declan was lost in thought, and I was trying to piece together everything I’d just learned.

Finally, he spoke up. “I know I should have told you. I was scared, and then it just got harder to bring up.”

I nodded, trying to digest his words. “I need some time to process all of this.”

He reached for my hand. “I promise I’ll explain everything. Just please, let’s not jump to conclusions.”

I pulled away gently. “I think we both need some space to think.”

I walked out of the room, my heart heavy with confusion and hurt. Dana was waiting nearby, her face a mix of concern and regret.

“I’m sorry, Maris,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I never meant to come between you two.”

I didn’t want to hear apologies just yet. “I just need some time.”

She nodded, respecting my need for space.

I left the hospital, my mind swirling with thoughts. The city lights blurred as I drove home, each red light an eternity of pondering what this all meant for Declan and me.

That night, I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, replaying every moment, every word. I thought back to the years we’d spent together, and how everything had changed in a single afternoon.

I knew we weren’t done; there was so much more to uncover, more truth to be revealed. But for now, I needed rest. Tomorrow would be another day, and perhaps it would bring more clarity.

As I drifted into an uneasy sleep, I realized that this story was far from over. There were still questions that needed answering, and I wasn’t ready to walk away without them.
