My new wife’s 7-year-old daughter always cried when we were alone. “What’s wrong?” I’d ask,

… I felt a chill run down my spine. Lumi was holding a small, old photograph, slightly creased at the edges. In the picture, I saw a man who looked unsettlingly familiar. He was sitting in a park, laughing with a woman who could only be Maris. But the man wasn’t me.

“Who is he?” I asked softly, kneeling beside Lumi so I could see her face.

Lumi’s eyes were wide, reflecting a mix of fear and confusion. “Daddy,” she whispered again, pointing at the man in the picture.

I swallowed hard, my mind racing. This wasn’t just a random photo; it meant something. It was a piece of the puzzle I hadn’t known existed. “Where did you get this?” I asked, keeping my voice gentle.

She hesitated, glancing at the staircase again, then back at me. “Mommy’s drawer,” she said quietly, as if worried someone might hear.

“Does she know you took it?” I asked, trying to piece together the implications. Lumi shook her head, and I could see the tears welling up in her eyes once more.

“Why were you so scared to show me this?” I asked, my heart aching for this little girl caught in the middle of something I was only beginning to comprehend.

She looked down at her feet, then back up at me, her voice barely audible. “Mommy said… Mommy said not to show you. Said you wouldn’t understand.”

I nodded, trying to absorb the weight of her words. “Lumi, it’s alright. You did the right thing by telling me.”

I sat back on my heels, thinking. Maris had secrets, ones she hadn’t shared with me. The man in the photograph had been a part of her life, and she had hidden that part away. But why?

“Thank you for trusting me,” I said, looking into Lumi’s serious eyes. “I promise to figure this out.”

She nodded, a small flicker of relief crossing her face. I knew I needed to talk to Maris, to confront her about the photograph and the lies. But more importantly, I needed to be there for Lumi, to reassure her that she wasn’t alone.

“We’ll keep this between us for now, okay?” I suggested gently, and she nodded.

I knew at that moment that whatever Maris had been hiding, it was more than just a picture. It was a part of their past that was still affecting their present. And it was up to me to unravel the truth, for Lumi’s sake and for my own peace of mind.

As I tucked the photograph back into her backpack, I felt a determination solidify within me. This family was broken in ways I hadn’t understood, but I was a part of it now. I had to find a way to mend it, starting with understanding who the man in the picture was and what he meant to Maris.

I glanced at Lumi, her small frame still holding onto a weight that no child should bear alone. “We’ll figure this out together,” I promised her.

The questions hung between us like shadows, waiting to be illuminated. But for now, I had taken the first step towards understanding.

To be continued…
