At the family reunion, my mother looked at me across the resort table and said,

The sun began to set over Crestwater Ridge Resort, painting the sky with shades of orange and pink. As I walked through the elegantly decorated halls, I couldn’t shake off the earlier encounter with my family. It was bittersweet knowing they were unaware of the part of my life that had flourished, even in the face of their doubt.

After settling into my suite, I decided to take a walk around the resort. Crisp autumn air filled my lungs, and the sound of leaves crunching beneath my feet brought a sense of peace. The property looked spectacular with the last light of the day casting long shadows across the manicured lawns and flowerbeds.

I strolled towards the spring-fed pool that had once been hidden under layers of neglect. Now, it was a pristine oasis, the water shimmering invitingly. Guests lounged around, some with drinks in hand, others flipping through glossy magazines, all enjoying the quiet luxury the resort promised.

The evening breeze swirled around me as I approached the main lounge, where guests gathered for pre-dinner drinks. The staff moved gracefully between the tables, offering canapés and wine selections. I caught Thomas Whitfield’s eye, and he nodded, a silent understanding passing between us. Everything was running smoothly.

Just then, I noticed Aunt Linda and Davina among the guests. They were seated at a table near a large window, the view of the ridgeline stretching beyond them. I hesitated for a moment, then decided to approach.

“Evening,” I greeted, trying to sound casual. Aunt Linda looked up, surprise flickering across her face.

“Mara,” she said, her tone neutral. “Lovely place, isn’t it?”

“Yes, it is,” I replied, a small smile tugging at my lips. “I was just admiring the view.”

Davina sipped her drink, glancing around the room. “I heard this resort is quite exclusive,” she remarked, her attempt at sounding worldly not lost on me.

I nodded. “It does have a certain charm. I hope you both enjoy your stay.”

Aunt Linda seemed to relax a little, perhaps assuming my visit was just a fleeting exchange. As we exchanged pleasantries, my mind drifted to Lily back home, imagining her delight at hearing this part of the story.

Before I could excuse myself, the conversation took a familiar turn. Davina leaned in, a conspiratorial tone in her voice. “So, Mara, still doing that little hospitality thing?”

I chuckled softly. “Yes, still at it.”

“Well, don’t forget about networking,” Aunt Linda advised, her voice dripping with the usual condescension. “It’s important to, you know, understand the luxury market.”

The irony almost made me laugh out loud. “I’ll keep that in mind,” I said, maintaining my composure.

As I walked away, I felt a strange sense of freedom. They were themselves, as Lily had predicted, and I was just fine with that. Sometimes, not correcting assumptions felt like a victory in itself.

Back in my suite, I kicked off my sandals and sank into a comfortable chair by the window. The night’s quiet settled around me, offering a moment of reflection. Tomorrow would be another day of balancing family dynamics and the life I had built.

Looking out over the ridgeline, I felt a surge of pride for what I’d accomplished. The resort was a testament to perseverance, a dream realized in stone and timber.

But the story wasn’t over yet. There was more to come, more to say, and perhaps even more surprises down the line.
