My son’s school called me at work. Come immediately. It’s an emergency. When I arrived,

**Part 2**

… “Warning.”

The room seemed to hold its breath, echoing the pulse in my ears. I reached out instinctively, but Sergeant Walsh held the note away, her expression cautious yet determined.

“What does it say?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Sergeant Walsh unfolded the paper carefully, avoiding smudging any possible fingerprints. I watched, heart pounding, as she read the note aloud.

“Tyler,” she began, glancing at me before continuing. “Do not share your lunch. Someone could get hurt.”

The paper trembled slightly in her gloved hand, a stark contrast against the sandwich’s innocent exterior. I could hardly believe that such a sinister message had been hidden in my son’s lunch.

Principal Morrison stepped forward, concern etched on her face. “Mrs. Patterson, this is serious. We need to understand who might have done this and why.”

“Diane would never harm Tyler,” I replied defensively, though doubt crept into my mind. “She loves him. She’s been part of his daily routine since he was born.”

Sergeant Walsh nodded, acknowledging my turmoil. “We know this could be a misunderstanding, but we need to investigate every possibility to ensure Tyler’s safety.”

Fear twisted in my stomach. “What should I do?”

“We need to talk to Diane,” said Sergeant Walsh. “And anyone else who might have had access to his lunchbox. For now, though, we need to make sure Tyler is okay.”

The need to see my son overpowered everything else. “Can I see him now?”

Principal Morrison nodded, leading me towards the nurse’s office. My heart raced as I hurried down the hallway, passing colorful bulletin boards and the echo of children laughing in classrooms. It felt surreal, as if I were moving in slow motion.

When I reached the nurse’s office, Tyler sat on a small cot, clutching his dinosaur backpack. His eyes widened when he saw me, relief washing over his face.

“Mom!” he cried, running into my arms.

I hugged him tightly, his familiar scent grounding me amidst the chaos. “Are you okay, sweetheart?” I asked, pulling back to look into his eyes.

He nodded, a little pale but otherwise unharmed. “I didn’t eat my sandwich,” he said, clinging to my sleeve. “The nurse said I was smart not to trade.”

My heart ached at the thought of what could have happened. “I’m so proud of you for listening, Tyler.”

As I held him close, the door opened, and Diane rushed in, her face etched with worry. “What happened, Sarah?”

“Diane,” I said, stepping back reluctantly. “They found a note in Tyler’s lunch. It said not to share, that someone could get hurt.”

Shock crossed her features. “I didn’t… I would never…” Her voice broke, and she shook her head fiercely. “I just packed his favorite lunch like always.”

Sergeant Walsh, who had followed us, approached gently. “We need to ask you some questions, ma’am.”

Diane nodded, tears brimming in her eyes. “Of course. Anything to help.”

I wanted to believe her. But the fear of the unknown loomed large. Who would do such a thing, and why?

As Tyler held my hand, I realized this was only the beginning. There were too many unanswered questions, and the truth felt elusive, slipping through my fingers like sand.

“I need to figure this out,” I whispered to Diane, my voice firm despite my fear. “For Tyler’s sake.”

She nodded, her resolve matching mine. “We’ll find out.”

The path ahead was unclear, but as long as Tyler was safe, I knew I had the strength to uncover the truth.
