Caleb closed the door behind me, and I found myself standing in a room that felt heavy with unspoken words. Dr. Helen Park nodded to acknowledge my presence but kept her focus on Caleb.
“Maren,” Caleb began, his voice steady but carrying an undercurrent of urgency. “We found something in the scan that requires immediate attention.”
I felt my heart skip. “What is it?”
He exchanged a look with Dr. Park before focusing on me again. “There are signs of a foreign substance in your system. It appears to have been administered over a long period and has caused the symptoms you’ve been experiencing.”
I blinked, trying to digest his words. “A foreign substance? What does that mean?”
Dr. Park spoke up, her tone gentle yet firm. “We believe you may have been exposed to a toxic compound. We’re running further tests to identify it.”
The room seemed to tilt slightly. “How could that happen?”
Caleb’s eyes held a mixture of concern and anger. “That’s what we’re trying to determine. But based on the evidence, it appears this was deliberate.”
Deliberate. The word echoed in my mind, unsettling and heavy. I thought of Trent, his reassuring words, his constant presence. A chill ran down my spine.
“Do you think Trent is involved?” I asked, my voice trembling.
Caleb hesitated for a moment before answering. “We can’t jump to conclusions. But we need to consider all possibilities. Right now, our priority is your health and safety.”
Dr. Park added, “We’ll ensure you’re protected while we investigate this further.”
I nodded slowly, my mind racing with questions and fears. I wanted to believe this was all a mistake, that the man I married couldn’t possibly have done something so horrific. But a quiet voice inside me whispered doubts I couldn’t ignore.
“What should I do?” I asked.
Caleb reached for my hand, squeezing it gently. “We’ll keep you here for observation. You won’t be alone, and we’ll get to the bottom of this.”
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “Okay,” I said, though my voice wavered.
As we stepped out of the office, I saw Trent standing at the end of the hallway, his face a mask of concern. He took a step toward me, but Caleb positioned himself between us.
“Maren needs rest,” Caleb said firmly. “We’ll talk later.”
Trent’s eyes flicked to me, confusion and frustration playing across his features. “What did they say?”
I glanced at Caleb, then back at Trent, trying to gauge his reaction. “They found something in the scan,” I replied carefully. “I need to stay for further tests.”
His expression shifted, a flicker of something I couldn’t quite read. “Of course,” he said, smoothing his features into a look of supportive concern. “I’ll be here.”
Caleb motioned for a nurse to guide me to a room, and I followed, feeling Trent’s eyes on my back. Once inside, I sank onto the hospital bed, my mind a whirl of emotions and uncertainty.
As the door closed, I reminded myself that I wasn’t alone. Caleb was here, along with a team of professionals dedicated to uncovering the truth. I had to trust the process, even as the world I thought I knew began to unravel.
Would Trent’s secrets finally come to light? What would the tests reveal? Deep down, I knew this was only the beginning of a much larger story.
