The morning sun peeked through the curtains of the small storage room, casting a soft glow on Gwen’s weary face. I had barely slept, my mind racing with plans and possibilities. Gwen was still asleep, her breathing shallow but steady. I knew I had to act fast. Her health couldn’t wait, and neither could my desire for justice.
I quietly slipped out of the room, careful not to wake her. As I entered the kitchen, I found my mother and sister already making breakfast. They were cheerful, discussing their plans now that they thought even more money would be coming their way. My mother was wearing another lavish outfit, and Paige was scrolling through her phone, likely browsing for things to buy next.
“Morning,” I said casually, grabbing a mug and pouring myself some coffee. I needed to act as if nothing was amiss, at least for the time being. They greeted me with forced smiles, their greed barely concealed beneath their polite expressions.
I spent the next few days pretending to sort out the paperwork for the supposed compensation package. Meanwhile, I was documenting everything. Photos of Gwen’s scars, her medical reports, and even secretly recorded conversations where my family spoke openly about how they used the money. Each piece of evidence was crucial for the plan I had in mind.
In the evenings, Gwen and I would discuss our future. We talked about moving away, starting fresh, and finding her the best medical treatment possible. Her eyes, although tired, sparkled with hope whenever we dreamed about better days.
One afternoon, while my mother and Paige were out shopping, I finally called a lawyer. I explained the entire situation and provided the evidence I had gathered. The lawyer assured me that we had a strong case to reclaim the assets and even pursue legal action for the funds they had misused.
That evening, I sat down with Gwen in the small storage room. “It’s almost time,” I whispered. “I’ve spoken to a lawyer. We’re going to get everything back.”
Her eyes welled up with tears, but she nodded, understanding the importance of patience and precision.
The day finally came when my mother and sister confronted me. They were growing impatient and wanted to know when they could expect the money. I knew this was the moment to spring the trap.
I took a deep breath, maintaining a calm demeanor. “Actually, there’s been a change of plans,” I said. “The funds won’t be coming through.”
Confusion spread across their faces. Paige glanced at my mother, expecting her to say something. “What do you mean?” my mother asked, her voice laced with suspicion.
“I mean, there never was a compensation package,” I replied. “But there is a lawyer who’s been informed of everything you’ve done.” I watched their faces turn pale, the realization of what was happening dawning on them.
“You can’t prove anything,” Paige spat, her voice filled with panic.
“Actually, I can,” I said, holding up my phone. “I have everything recorded and documented.”
The silence was deafening. They knew they were trapped.
As I stood there, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. It was far from over, but I had taken the first step toward justice for Gwen.
