Jesse and I stood in tense silence, our eyes fixed on the house. The sun was warm, but an unsettling chill crept over us. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself.
“Stay here,” I instructed Jesse, as I walked towards the door. My heart pounded as I fumbled with the keys. Each second felt like an eternity. I wasn’t sure what I would find inside, but I knew I had to go in.
The door swung open quietly, and I stepped into the hallway. The house was dim, with the curtains drawn tight. The air inside was a little stuffy, and the familiar scent of Clara’s vanilla candles lingered.
I listened carefully, straining to hear any sound. For a moment, everything was silent. I turned to check the living room, peeking past the furniture shadows, but everything seemed in place. Then, just as I was about to move further, I heard it again—a soft, pitiful whimper. It was coming from upstairs.
I moved cautiously, my footsteps barely making a sound on the wooden floor. As I climbed the staircase, the cries grew a bit louder, guiding me like a beacon. They were unmistakably human, yet so weak that they made my heart ache.
When I reached the landing, I paused. Clara’s bedroom door was slightly ajar, and I could see a shadow moving inside. I pushed the door open slowly, revealing a figure huddled in the corner of the room. My eyes widened in shock.
“Liam?” I said, recognizing my grandson immediately. His eyes were puffy from tears, and he looked up at me with a mixture of fear and relief.
“Grandpa,” he whispered, his voice barely audible. He stood up unsteadily and ran into my arms, clutching me tightly. My heart broke seeing him so scared.
“It’s okay, buddy,” I murmured, holding him close. “I’ve got you now.”
As I comforted him, I wondered how he had ended up here alone. Where was Evan? Where was Clara? I had so many questions, but I knew that the priority was making sure Liam was safe and calm.
“Are you hurt?” I asked gently, pulling back to check him over. He shook his head, though he seemed exhausted and frightened.
“Okay, let’s get you something to drink,” I said, leading him downstairs. Jesse was waiting anxiously by the front door, and his face softened when he saw Liam.
“Is he okay?” Jesse asked, concerned.
“Yeah, I think so,” I replied. “I just don’t understand how he got here.”
In the kitchen, I poured a glass of water for Liam, and he drank it quickly. Once he seemed a bit more settled, I tried Clara’s phone again, but there was still no answer. I was starting to feel the weight of worry pressing down on me.
I turned to Jesse. “Thank you for letting me know about this. I’m glad you called.”
He nodded. “I’m just glad he’s okay.”
I knew I needed to figure out what was happening. Why was Liam here alone? Was Clara in trouble? My mind was swirling with possibilities, each more troubling than the last.
“Jesse, can you stay here with Liam for a bit? I need to make some calls,” I said, hoping to find answers.
“Of course,” he agreed, looking at Liam with a reassuring smile.
I stepped outside and dialed Clara’s number again, my heart heavy with worry and confusion. Something was very wrong, and I would not rest until I got to the bottom of it.
As I prepared to delve deeper into this unsettling mystery, I knew that I had to stay calm for Liam’s sake. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that things were more complicated than they seemed.
