Dr. Marcus took a deep breath, his eyes steady on mine. “It’s a toxic substance commonly found in industrial settings,” he said slowly. “It should never come in contact with skin.”
My heart pounded in my chest. “You mean… it was deliberate?”
Dr. Marcus nodded. “That’s what it seems like. We’re sending the sample for a more detailed analysis, but it’s clear that this wasn’t an accident.”
Detective Hall stepped closer, her face serious but gentle. “Jessi, we need to keep you safe. We’re going to move you to a secure room where Luca can’t find you. Until we figure out what’s going on, it’s important that we keep him away.”
I nodded, my mind spinning. How could the man I trusted, the man I loved, do something so sinister? The very thought made me shiver, even with the fever still burning in my body.
The police officers stayed nearby as the nurses helped wheel my bed to another part of the hospital. The new room was small, but it felt like a fortress. Dr. Marcus checked my IV and gave me a reassuring nod before leaving me in the care of the nurses.
Detective Hall stayed with me, asking more questions about my life with Luca. As I talked, memories surfaced — little things I had overlooked, like the way Luca had become more controlling lately, or how he insisted on handling all the household chores himself. Things I chalked up to him being overprotective now seemed more ominous.
My phone buzzed again, and I tensed. Another message from Luca flickered on the screen. “Jessi, please answer me. I’m worried about you.”
Detective Hall took the phone, her eyes scanning the message. “We need to keep this as evidence,” she said. “It’s important to show his state of mind.”
I nodded, feeling a mixture of fear and betrayal. Part of me wanted to believe there was some misunderstanding, that Luca wasn’t capable of hurting me. But the evidence was too strong to ignore.
Hours passed, and the hospital staff did their best to keep me comfortable and informed. My fever began to subside, and the medical team closely monitored the infection in my leg. They assured me that with the right treatment, I would recover fully.
As night fell, Detective Hall returned to my room. “We’re working on getting a restraining order against Luca,” she said. “And we’ll have officers stationed here for your protection.”
“Thank you,” I whispered, feeling grateful yet overwhelmed by everything happening so fast.
“We’re also looking into the substance found on your bandage. Once we have more details, we can take further action,” she continued.
As I lay in the hospital bed, exhaustion started to take over. Despite everything, sleep began to claim me.
Detective Hall gave me a supportive smile. “Try to rest, Jessi. We’ll keep you safe.”
As my eyes closed, a flicker of hope sparked within me. The future was uncertain, but I knew I needed answers, and more than anything, I needed to ensure my safety.
But this wasn’t the end. There was more to uncover, more to understand.
