Ethan stood there, processing the weight of what I had just shared. The atmosphere in the room felt electric, charged with unresolved tension and unspoken words. My heart raced, and I could feel the sting of tears threatening to spill over. But I knew I couldn’t break down, not now, not with so much at stake.
“I won’t let this go,” Ethan said firmly, his eyes locking onto mine with a determination I hadn’t seen before. “You deserve better, Ava. We need to find a way to stop this.”
His words were like a lifeline, and for the first time in months, I felt a glimmer of hope. But the reality of the situation quickly crushed that feeling. “Ethan, please,” I pleaded softly, trying to protect him from the fallout of my own mess. “You have a foundation to run, a gala to lead. Dr. Vaughn is too powerful, and I can’t risk—”
“Ava,” Ethan interrupted, his voice gentle yet unyielding. “Your safety matters more than any event or any award. We will find a way.”
I hesitated, torn between the urge to trust him and the instinct to protect both of us by keeping quiet. His unwavering gaze, however, gave me a sense of security I desperately needed. For the first time, I allowed myself to consider the possibility that things could change.
As I stood there, lost in my thoughts, a knock on the door jolted me back to reality. “Mr. Carter, we’re ready for you,” a voice called from the hallway.
Ethan nodded, acknowledging the call to duty. He gave me a reassuring look before stepping out into the corridor. “We’ll talk more after the gala,” he promised, his voice full of sincerity.
I watched him leave, feeling a mix of anxiety and relief. My heart felt lighter knowing Ethan was on my side, but the evening ahead filled me with dread. I needed to face Dr. Vaughn, pretend everything was fine, and simultaneously figure out my escape plan.
As I made my way downstairs, I tried to blend in, wearing a polite smile as I mingled with the guests. The ballroom was alive with chatter and laughter, the air thick with the scent of expensive perfume and optimism.
Dr. Vaughn found me quickly, wrapping a possessive arm around my waist just as he had so many times before. “You look stunning,” he complimented me, his voice smooth and charming, as if he was completely unaware of the turmoil inside me.
“Thank you,” I replied, my voice steady, my face a mask of composure. The awards ceremony loomed closer, and I knew I had to hold it together just a little longer.
As Ethan took the stage to deliver his opening remarks, his eyes found mine in the crowd. For a brief moment, I felt a sense of solace knowing he was there, aware of my struggles, and willing to help.
Throughout the evening, I remained close to Dr. Vaughn, playing the part of the supportive fiancée. Inside, I counted every second until I could step away from the charade and confide in Ethan without fear.
The gala ended with applause and congratulations all around. Dr. Vaughn was hailed as a hero, just as we had anticipated. Yet, as the guests began to leave, I no longer felt entirely alone.
Ethan approached me amidst the departing crowd, his expression unreadable but his presence comforting. “Ready to talk?” he asked, his voice low and discreet.
I nodded, feeling a surge of gratitude for his support. “Yes,” I replied, my voice carrying a hint of determination. “Let’s talk.”
As we left the ballroom together, I knew that the conversation ahead could change everything. Part 3 of this story was about to unfold, and if you want to read more, leave a comment below this Facebook post.
