As the plane touched down in Chicago, I felt a mix of relief and anxiety. While I had escaped Austin and all its painful memories, the idea that someone was already searching for me at the airport was unsettling. My mind raced with possibilities. Was it Ryan, my ex-husband? Or perhaps a relative concerned about my sudden departure?

Noah’s presence beside me was oddly comforting, even though I had just met him. Knowing he was a powerful billionaire added a layer of intrigue, but at that moment, he was simply someone who offered kindness when I needed it most.

As we disembarked, I clutched Lily tightly. I couldn’t help but scan the crowd, half-expecting to see a familiar face. Noah walked beside me, his demeanor calm yet alert.

“Do you have someone meeting you?” he asked softly.

I shook my head. “My friend Emma is expecting us, but she’s at work. We’ll take a taxi.”

He nodded thoughtfully. “How about I have my driver take you? It might be safer, considering the situation.”

I hesitated. Accepting help from a stranger, even a kind one like Noah, was daunting. But the thought of wandering through an airport, unsure of who might be looking for me, was even more daunting.

“Okay,” I agreed, my voice barely above a whisper.

As we made our way through the terminal, I kept a firm grip on Lily and followed Noah’s lead. His security team was waiting, a group of serious-looking individuals dressed in suits. They nodded respectfully at Noah, and one of them took charge, guiding us efficiently through the bustling airport.

Once outside, a sleek black car awaited us. The driver opened the door, and I settled into the plush seat with Lily on my lap. Noah climbed in beside me, and the car smoothly pulled away from the curb.

“Thank you,” I said again, feeling the weight of the day slowly lifting.

Noah shrugged modestly. “It’s the least I can do. I just hope everything’s okay.”

I nodded, though uncertainty still lingered. “I guess we’ll see.”

During the drive, I focused on the city passing by outside the window, the skyscrapers towering in the distance. Chicago was going to be a new start, and I hoped it would bring the peace I desperately needed.

Noah’s phone buzzed intermittently, and he responded with brief, businesslike texts. Yet, he always returned his attention to me, ensuring I didn’t feel alone in this unexpected journey.

As we neared the address I had given, Noah turned toward me. “If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out. Sometimes, having a friend—even a new one—can make all the difference.”

I smiled, genuinely touched by his words. “Thank you, Noah. I mean it.”

The car came to a stop in front of a modest apartment building. I gathered my things, and Noah helped with my luggage.

“Take care, Emily,” he said earnestly, as I stepped onto the sidewalk.

“You too,” I replied, holding Lily close. I watched the car drive away, a part of me still in disbelief about the surreal encounter.

Once inside the apartment, I breathed deeply. It felt good to be in a space that was new, untainted by the past. I was ready to build a new life, one step at a time.

But as I settled in, my mind kept returning to the airport, to Noah, and the mystery of who had been looking for me. I knew this was not the end of my story.
