My stepmother had no idea i was paying $12,000 a month. Then she told me

“Why didn’t you tell us you were paying for all of this?”

I took a deep breath and kept my voice calm. “Because it wasn’t about telling anyone. It was about keeping Dad’s house afloat when it needed it.”

Patricia’s voice came back on the line, a bit softer now. “You could have at least talked to us, Carla.”

I sipped my coffee, letting the warmth seep through the ceramic cup. “I did talk, Patricia. I just didn’t use words.”

She sighed heavily. “We didn’t know. We assumed—”

“Yes, you assumed,” I interrupted, “and now you have the opportunity to manage things in your own way.”

Silence hung in the air, punctuated only by the faint sounds of traffic outside my new place. It was Patricia who finally broke it. “So what do we do now?”

“Call the utility companies. Set up your own accounts. And Canton and Melanie will need to furnish the house themselves, or find a way to retrieve the items they want.”

I heard her whisper something to Canton, likely about the sudden reality they were facing. “We might need help, Carla.”

I considered her words. This was the first time in a long while she had acknowledged needing my assistance. “I’ll help you figure it out,” I said, then added, “but you have to handle it from here.”

Patricia exhaled, and I could almost hear the gears turning in her mind as she reassessed her situation. “Alright,” she finally said. “We’ll manage. Thank you for… everything.”

“You’re welcome,” I replied. “Just remember, this is what you wanted.”

By the time we hung up, I felt a strange sense of closure. I had done what I needed to do, and now it was up to Patricia and Canton to take charge of their own lives in that house.

As I sat there, watching the city bustle below me, I realized that I, too, was ready for a new beginning. It was time to focus on my own life and let others take responsibility for theirs.

Before I got lost in thought, I picked up my phone and drafted a quick post for my Facebook friends: “Part 2 is out! If you want to know what happens next, leave a comment below, and stay tuned for Part 3!”

I hit ‘post’ and smiled. A new chapter was starting, and I was finally ready to turn the page.
