Dr. Stevens gently asked, “Emma, can you tell me how you’re feeling right now?” His voice was calm, but I could feel the tension in the room.
Emma looked up at him and hesitated. “I feel sleepy a lot,” she said softly. “Sometimes my legs feel weird, like they’re not mine.”
Dr. Stevens nodded, listening closely. “Okay, that’s helpful,” he said. “You’re very brave for telling us this, Emma. We’re going to make sure you feel better, alright?”
Emma nodded, her eyes wide and trusting.
Dr. Stevens turned to me, his expression serious. “We need to do some tests,” he explained. “We’ll check her heart and run a few other assessments to ensure there are no immediate effects from the medication.”
I nodded, feeling a mix of fear and relief. Relief that Emma was finally going to get the help she needed, but fear for what the tests might reveal. How could this have happened right under my nose?
While Dr. Stevens and his nurse conducted the tests, I sat beside Emma, holding her hand. She seemed calm, her little fingers wrapped around mine, trusting that I would make everything okay. I felt a pang of guilt for not realizing sooner what was happening.
After what felt like an eternity, Dr. Stevens finished his examination. “Emma’s vital signs are stable,” he said, his voice reassuring. “We need to follow up with a specialist to ensure everything is fine, but for tonight, she should be okay.”
“Thank you,” I whispered, overwhelmed by a rush of emotions.
“We’ll also need to address this situation with your mother-in-law,” Dr. Stevens continued, his tone serious again. “It’s crucial that Emma doesn’t receive any more of this medication.”
I nodded, my mind already racing with thoughts of how to confront Diane. How could she do this to Emma? What had she been thinking?
As we left the doctor’s office, I held Emma’s hand tightly. The drive home was quiet, Emma dozing off in her car seat, her small face peaceful. I kept glancing at her in the rearview mirror, my heart aching with a mixture of love and anger.
When we arrived home, I tucked Emma into bed, promising her that everything would be okay. She fell asleep quickly, exhausted from the day’s events.
I sat silently in the living room, gathering my thoughts. Tomorrow, I would have to confront Diane. I needed to understand why she had given Emma those pills and ensure it never happened again.
There was a lot to process, and I knew this was only the beginning of uncovering the truth. I felt a deep resolve to protect Emma, to make sure she never had to feel scared or unsure about anything again.
As I settled into the couch, my mind drifted to what the future might hold. There were still questions that needed answers, and I was determined to find them.
