The next morning, I found myself standing outside the academy’s gates. As I looked at the majestic old buildings, I felt a storm of emotions. This place was supposed to be a beacon of discipline, honor, and respect, yet it had concealed a dark truth about those who walked its halls.
I had spent the night planning my next steps. I needed to gather evidence, secure witnesses, and unravel the web of deceit that protected these cadets. My mind was focused, my resolve unbreakable. I would not rest until justice was served.
I began with a visit to the academy’s administration office. As I waited, I noticed a series of plaques on the wall, bearing the names of alumni who had gone on to achieve great things. Just as I was about to read more, a secretary called me in. The office was neat, with stacks of papers neatly organized on the desk.
The commandant, a man named Colonel Avery, extended a hand as I entered. His firm grip and steady gaze spoke of years in service, but I remained wary. Trust was a luxury I couldn’t afford.
“Colonel Walker, I’m deeply sorry about what happened to your daughter. We’re doing everything we can,” he said, his voice steady but distant.
“I appreciate that, Colonel Avery. I’m here to ensure that ‘everything’ really does mean everything,” I replied calmly.
Our conversation was polite but tense. I asked about the failed security cameras and the missing patrols. Avery assured me they were investigating, but his answers were overly rehearsed. I could sense he was trying to manage the situation rather than solve it.
After leaving his office, I headed to the library. It wasn’t books I was interested in, but the academy’s network. I needed access to their digital records. Fortunately, Marcus had already provided me with remote support. With his help, I connected to their system through my phone, looking for surveillance logs and communication records that had been conveniently ‘lost.’
As I sifted through files, I found something interesting. A deleted video timestamped roughly an hour before Lily was found. I forwarded it to Marcus, who promised to recover what he could.
With my laptop tucked away, I decided to pay a visit to the cadets’ dormitory. The building was bustling with students, some rushing to class, others engaged in lively conversation. I hoped to speak with those who might have seen or heard something but were too scared to come forward.
In the common room, a group of young cadets sat discussing their day. I approached them, my tone gentle but firm. “I’m looking for anyone who might have information about what happened to my daughter.”
Their expressions shifted from curiosity to unease. Most avoided eye contact, but one young man, clearly nervous, hesitated. I caught his eye, and he nodded slightly. We moved to a quieter corner.
“I’m not supposed to say anything,” he started, his voice just above a whisper. “But I saw them that night… Ethan, Brandon, and Tyler. They were acting strange, and I heard them mention something about ‘making sure she doesn’t talk.’”
I thanked him, promising to keep his name out of any reports. This was the first real lead, a thread to pull on that could unravel the whole mess.
As the day ended, I returned to the hospital. Lily still lay there, a fragile reminder of why I couldn’t stop. I vowed, silently, to make those responsible face the consequences.
The investigation was just beginning, and I knew that it would demand everything from me. But I was ready; the Ghost Commander was ready.
