Arthur motioned for us to sit at the kitchen table. The room smelled of freshly baked bread, and our stomachs growled. Despite our hunger, Annie and I sat still, unsure of what to expect.
Arthur brewed two cups of tea before joining us at the table. He placed a plate of sandwiches in front of us and nodded for us to eat. Annie didn’t need any more encouragement. She grabbed a sandwich and began to eat quickly. I followed, grateful for the food.
As we ate, Arthur studied us. “Your sister, Grace, she’s important to you, isn’t she?”
I nodded, swallowing a mouthful of sandwich. “She’s all we have.”
Arthur leaned back in his chair, eyes thoughtful. “I lost my wife many years ago. She was my world, just as Grace is to you.”
Annie paused, crumbs on her lips. “The ring belonged to her?” she asked quietly.
Arthur nodded. “Yes, it was a gift from our first anniversary. She misplaced it shortly before she passed. I thought it was lost forever.”
There was a moment of silence as Arthur collected his thoughts. He seemed different now, softer. “When you returned it, you gave me more than a ring. You gave me a piece of my past back.”
The doorbell rang, startling us. Arthur stood up and walked to the door. When he returned, he wasn’t alone. Behind him was a woman with a kind smile, carrying a medical bag.
“This is Dr. Bennett,” Arthur introduced. “A friend who’s agreed to check on Grace.”
I was stunned. “But we can’t pay for a doctor.”
Arthur waved a hand dismissively. “Consider it a thank you for your honesty and hard work.”
Dr. Bennett smiled at us. “Shall we go see Grace?”
Annie and I exchanged glances. This was more help than we had hoped for. We nodded and led her to the door.
As we walked back to our house, Arthur accompanied us. He seemed to know the neighborhood well, although he had never mentioned visiting before. I couldn’t help but wonder if he had been watching us for a while.
When we arrived, Grace was lying on the couch, looking pale and worn. Dr. Bennett introduced herself and began her examination while Arthur stood quietly in the corner, watching.
After a thorough check-up, Dr. Bennett nodded approvingly. “Grace is exhausted and malnourished, but with proper care and rest, she’ll recover.”
Relief washed over me. “Thank you,” I said, my voice thick with emotion.
Arthur stepped forward. “Caleb, Annie, would it be alright if I helped a little more? Perhaps arranged for some groceries and necessary supplies?”
Annie beamed at him. “You’d do that for us?”
Arthur smiled gently. “You’ve done more for me than you know. Besides, I could use some company from time to time. Maybe we could make this a regular thing?”
Annie nodded enthusiastically. “We’d love that.”
As we made plans to help Grace, I realized that Arthur had become more than just the man behind the mansion’s gates. He was someone who had opened his heart to us, just as we had to him.
