I came home forty-eight hours after emergency surgery, pale enough that I had to brace

Leo stepped into the dim light of the kitchen, his face a mixture of anger and disbelief. Agnes’s hand trembled as she lowered it slowly, her eyes wide with shock. Chloe sat frozen on the sofa, her phone forgotten in her lap.

“Leo,” Agnes stammered, attempting to regain her composure. “It’s not what it looks like. She’s just causing trouble.”

Leo ignored her, his focus entirely on me. He walked over and placed a gentle hand on my shoulder, his eyes full of concern. “Are you okay?” he asked softly.

I nodded, though I was far from feeling okay. The pain in my side throbbed with every breath, a painful reminder of how fragile I felt.

He turned back to his mother, his expression hardening. “I heard everything. I can’t believe you tried to hurt her.”

Agnes’s lips tightened. “She’s been trying to turn you against us, Leo. She’s selfish and ungrateful. We needed her here.”

Chloe, finding her voice, joined in, “Yeah, she’s always acting like she’s the victim.”

Leo shook his head, disbelief etched across his features. “She just had surgery because she almost died, and neither of you even checked on her. I thought you were here to help, not make things worse.”

Agnes opened her mouth to protest, but Leo silenced her with a raised hand. “I’ve been blind,” he admitted, turning back to me. “I’m sorry for not realizing sooner.”

I managed a weak smile, grateful that he was finally seeing the situation for what it was. “It’s not your fault, Leo.”

He took a deep breath, facing his family once more. “I think it’s time for some changes around here,” he said firmly. “Starting with you both finding somewhere else to live.”

Chloe’s mouth dropped open in shock. “What? You can’t be serious!”

Agnes’s eyes narrowed. “You’re choosing her over your own family?”

Leo nodded, unyielding. “Yes. Because she’s my wife and she deserves better than this.”

The room was silent for a moment, tension crackling in the air like electricity. Agnes and Chloe exchanged a glance, then turned back to Leo with a mixture of anger and betrayal.

“This isn’t over,” Agnes warned, her voice low.

Leo met her gaze unflinchingly. “It is for me.”

He turned back to me, his expression softening. “Let’s go pack your things.”

With his support, I felt a new strength filling me. Together, we headed upstairs, leaving Agnes and Chloe behind in the wreckage of their own making.

As I packed my belongings, I realized that this was just the beginning of a new chapter. There was relief but also uncertainty. Leo was by my side now, but we had a long way to go to rebuild trust and understanding.

Once my suitcases were filled, Leo helped me carry them downstairs. Agnes and Chloe watched in silence, their expressions unreadable. We stepped outside into the cool air, leaving the chaos behind.

As we drove away, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. For the first time in a long while, I felt hopeful. Leo reached over and squeezed my hand, a silent promise that we would face whatever came next together.
