**Part 2: Unraveling Secrets**
As I waited in the bank, the flour tin cradled under my arm, my mind swirled with questions. The manager, a tall woman with a kind face, approached me. Her name tag read “Ms. Johnson.” She greeted me with a gentle smile.
“Let’s step into my office,” she suggested, gesturing toward a glass-walled room at the corner of the branch.
I nodded and followed her, feeling both anxious and curious. Once inside, Ms. Johnson closed the door and motioned for me to sit. The room was small, but it offered privacy from the bustling bank floor.
“I’m sorry for your loss, Ms. Linda,” she began, pulling up something on her computer. “Your mother had an account with us, and it seems she left specific instructions regarding this money.”
I leaned forward, eager to learn more. “What kind of instructions?”
Ms. Johnson handed me a sealed envelope. “She wanted you to have this if anything happened to her.”
Taking a deep breath, I opened the envelope. Inside, I found a handwritten letter from Mama. It was dated two years before her passing.
**”Dear Linda,**
**If you’re reading this, it means you’ve found the money in the flour tin. I wanted to tell you in person, but I feared Wayne’s reaction if he ever found out. I saved that money for you, hoping it might replace some of what you lost.**
**Please know that I didn’t want to keep secrets. I tried to fix the mistake I made by trusting Wayne. I hoped to spare you from finding out what he did if I could.**
**The bank will help you set up an account to keep this safe. I’ve left instructions for them. I trust you know what to do next.**
**With all my love,**
**Mama**
Tears welled up in my eyes as I finished reading. Mama had known all along, and she tried to make it right in her way. A part of me felt relief, but another part of me burned with anger at Wayne and the secrets he kept from us.
Ms. Johnson cleared her throat gently, bringing me back to the present. “We can help you set up an account to keep the money secure. Your mother made sure you would have everything you need.”
I nodded, grateful for Mama’s foresight. We spent the next hour setting up the account and ensuring the money was safe. Ms. Johnson explained everything patiently, answering my questions with kindness.
As I left the bank, I felt a mix of emotions. The truth was heavy, but at least now I had some clarity. I decided that finding out what really happened to my settlement was the next step.
Back at Mama’s house, Russell was waiting. His expression was unreadable, but I knew there was more he wasn’t telling me.
“We need to talk,” I said, standing firm.
He hesitated, then nodded slowly. “Alright, Linda. Let’s talk.”
I realized this was just the beginning of uncovering the truth about Wayne and my settlement. There was so much more to discover, and I was determined to find out everything.
