Vanessa’s confident smile faltered as she exchanged glances with Preston. The silence in the room grew heavy, like a storm on the horizon. I kept my gaze steady on them, waiting for an answer.
Preston cleared his throat, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. “Well, we are here to ensure that Mr. Parker’s interests are protected,” he explained, trying to regain his composure.
I nodded slowly, letting the weight of my question hang in the air. “And yet, my father isn’t here. Nor has he mentioned any concerns to me directly.”
Vanessa’s smile returned, albeit with less conviction. “Christine, darling, we’re just trying to ensure everything is in order. We don’t want any surprises, do we?”
I leaned back in my chair, folding my arms. “I appreciate your concern, but until I hear from my father directly, I have no reason to discuss any personal financial matters with you. Especially anything involving my grandfather’s trust.”
Preston’s facade of professionalism cracked slightly as he shuffled the papers in his folder, clearly unprepared for this line of resistance. “Surely, there’s no harm in at least reviewing the situation,” he ventured.
“There’s no situation to review,” I replied calmly. “As far as I’m aware, everything is in perfect order. Unless you can provide me with something from my father, we have nothing more to discuss.”
The room fell silent again, the only sound the distant ticking of the wall clock. Vanessa’s frustration was evident, but she managed to keep her voice even. “Christine, we’re just thinking about your father’s future. It’s important to be proactive.”
I gave her a small, understanding smile. “And I’m thinking about my father’s peace of mind. I refuse to let any uninvited guests disrupt that.”
Preston closed his folder with a sigh. “Perhaps we’ve come at a bad time,” he conceded, rising from his chair.
Vanessa followed suit, a tight-lipped smile on her face. “We’ll talk soon,” she said, though it sounded more like a promise than a request.
I showed them to the door, watching as they made their way down the steps. Vanessa paused, turning back to me. “You know we’re only trying to help, right?”
I nodded. “I’m sure you believe that,” I said, letting the door close gently behind them.
Once they were gone, I returned to the kitchen and stood there for a moment, contemplating the encounter. It was clear that Vanessa was not going to give up easily, but I was determined to protect my grandfather’s legacy and my father’s peace.
I reached for my phone, intending to call Walter to update him on the visit. As I dialed his number, I glanced at the photograph of my grandfather on the mantel. His calm, wise eyes looked back at me, a reminder of the values he had instilled.
With Vanessa and her lawyer out of the way for now, I felt a sense of resolve settle over me. This was far from over, but I would face whatever came next with the same steady resolve.
And as I prepared to relay the day’s events to Walter, I knew there was much more to come. Vanessa’s curiosity was not easily satisfied, and I had a feeling this was just the beginning of her probing into our family’s financial affairs.
