I stood there, holding Sophie close, sensing the storm that was about to break. The air seemed charged with tension as the detective examined the birth certificate. Rosa stayed by my side, a steady presence amidst the chaos unfolding around us.
“Mr. Stanley,” the detective said, his voice careful and controlled, “this birth certificate lists a different mother than Trisha. Do you know anything about this?”
I shook my head slowly, trying to process the information. “I wasn’t aware,” I replied honestly. “Dennis never mentioned another woman or a child. Sophie is my granddaughter, and that’s all I know.”
The detective nodded, then turned to his colleagues to discuss their next steps. Meanwhile, Sophie clung to me, her small fingers wrapped tightly around my hand. Despite her ordeal, she seemed surprisingly calm, drawing strength from the adults around her.
As the police continued their investigation, I couldn’t help but feel a growing sense of betrayal. Dennis had not only hidden Sophie away, but he had also concealed her very existence from me. How could my own son have done such a thing?
The officers began to gather evidence, photographing the attic and collecting more items that might help piece together Sophie’s story. I watched them work, grateful that they were taking the situation seriously. The more they discovered, the more questions they had—questions I couldn’t answer.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed again. It was Dennis, calling once more. Reluctantly, I answered, prepared for another round of excuses.
“Dad,” he began, his voice strained, “you don’t understand. This is all a big misunderstanding. Trisha and I were going to sort everything out once we got back.”
I listened, but his words rang hollow. “Dennis, you left a child alone in an attic. That’s not something you can just explain away.”
“But it’s not what you think,” he insisted. “We needed time to figure things out, and Sophie was safe. We made sure of it.”
I could hear Trisha in the background, still protesting. It was clear they had concocted some story to justify their actions, but I wasn’t buying it.
“Come back and explain it to the police,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “This isn’t something you can handle from a distance.”
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. Finally, Dennis spoke again, his tone resigned. “Alright, Dad. We’re coming back. But please, just wait until we can talk.”
I hung up and turned to the detective. “They’re on their way,” I told him. “But I doubt they’ll have much of an explanation.”
The detective nodded, preparing for their arrival. Meanwhile, I focused on Sophie, offering her comfort and reassurance. Whatever happened next, I knew that she was my priority. She deserved a safe and loving home, something that I now had the power to provide.
As we waited for Dennis and Trisha to return, I contemplated the future. Sophie had been through so much, and it would take time for her to heal. But she was resilient, and I was determined to be there for her every step of the way.
The story was far from over. With Dennis and Trisha’s return, there would be more revelations and challenges ahead. But for now, I was content to hold Sophie close and promise her a brighter tomorrow.
