My brother smashed my head into the wall hard enough to leave blood running down

The realization that someone else finally heard her plea without words brought unexpected relief to Emily. Dr. Reeves continued to work efficiently, closing the wound with a steady hand, her touch gentle yet firm. The staples pinched against Emily’s scalp, but the physical pain felt distant compared to the tumult inside her.

Her mother sat in a rigid silence, her hands clutching the edge of her chair as if it were the only thing anchoring her to the moment. Emily’s mind raced with thoughts of Logan. His temper had always been a shadow lurking at the edge of their home, a presence that flickered unpredictably from teasing to rage. Could things have been different if someone had intervened sooner?

Dr. Reeves finished, offered a small smile of reassurance, and left the room to give Emily space to breathe. Emily glanced at her mother, who seemed to have shrunk into herself, her eyes cast down. For years, they had all been trapped in this cycle—hopeful that Logan’s explosions were just part of growing up, that he didn’t really mean it. Her mother’s insistence on covering for him had inadvertently allowed the situation to worsen.

“Emily,” her mother whispered, her voice cracking. “I didn’t know what to do. I thought… I thought things would get better.”

Emily swallowed hard, a lump in her throat. “Mom, they won’t get better unless we stop pretending they’re okay.”

Just then, the door opened, and a hospital security officer stepped inside, followed by a police officer. The officer introduced himself as Officer Miles. He was a kind-faced man with a gentle demeanor, a stark contrast to the tension in the room.

“Emily, I need to ask you a few questions, if that’s alright?” Officer Miles said softly, pulling a small notebook from his pocket.

Emily nodded, feeling a strange mix of fear and relief. She glanced at her mother, seeking a sign of support, and saw a flicker of agreement in her eyes. Maybe this was the turning point. Maybe they could finally confront the reality they’d been avoiding for so long.

As she recounted the night’s events, the words spilled out with a clarity she hadn’t expected. It was as if each detail she shared lightened the burden she had carried alone. Officer Miles listened attentively, taking notes, but his presence was more comforting than intimidating.

When she finished, he thanked her and assured her that they would help. There was a promise in his eyes that things would change, that this was the first step toward a safer future.

After the officers left, Emily and her mother sat in the quiet room, the tension between them slowly thawing. Her mother reached for Emily’s hand, her grip tentative but sincere.

“I’m sorry, Emily,” she murmured. “I shouldn’t have let it get this far.”

Emily squeezed her mother’s hand. “We’ll figure it out. Together.”

As they left the hospital, the night air felt different—cooler, clearer. There was still a long road ahead, but Emily felt something she hadn’t in a long time: hope.

Back home, the house was silent, the remnants of the earlier chaos waiting to be cleaned up. But Emily knew they would face it together.

This was not the end of their story; it was a new beginning. They would have to face the challenges and emotions that came with confronting the truth, but they wouldn’t be doing it alone anymore.

To be continued…
