The first thing my mother said when I came home from deployment was not welcome

Part 2:

As the paramedics tended to Leo and Sophia, I felt a heavy weight lift off my shoulders. It was not over yet, but I was no longer alone in this fight. Captain Ruiz and Detective Harris were professionals, and having them there restored some sense of control over the chaos. I watched as Sophia was gently examined, and I could see a trace of relief in her eyes now that help had arrived.

“Lucas,” Sophia whispered, gripping my hand tightly. Her eyes, filled with exhaustion and fear, also held a flicker of hope. “Thank you.”

I nodded, feeling a surge of determination. “We’ll get through this, together.”

Meanwhile, Captain Ruiz approached my mother, maintaining a calm yet authoritative demeanor. “Mrs. Hayes, we will need you to answer some questions regarding your treatment of Sophia and the child.”

My mother tried to regain her composure, but her confidence was visibly shaken. “I was only doing what I thought was best for my family.”

Detective Harris joined in. “This isn’t about family disagreements, ma’am. This is about potential neglect and abuse, and we take it very seriously.”

Audrey, standing to the side, looked lost and uncertain. For the first time, it seemed like she was realizing the gravity of the situation. Her gaze bounced between our mother and me, trying to find her footing in the unraveling narrative.

The paramedic holding Leo spoke up. “We need to get him to the hospital immediately. His temperature is dangerously high.”

Sophia’s grip tightened on my hand, her voice trembling. “Please, let me go with him.”

“Of course,” I reassured her. “I’ll be right behind you.”

Naomi, my attorney, stepped forward. “Sophia, I’ll stay here to ensure everything goes smoothly with the investigators. Focus on Leo. He needs you.”

Sophia nodded, tears in her eyes, as she was helped to her feet. The paramedics led her and Leo out of the nursery, and I followed closely, casting one last glance back at my mother and sister. Their faces were masked with a mix of anger and confusion, but the reality of the situation was beginning to sink in.

As we reached the front door, Captain Ruiz caught my eye and gave a firm nod. “We’ll handle everything here, Sergeant Hayes. Take care of your family.”

I exhaled, feeling a swell of gratitude for her support. “Thank you, Captain.”

The cool night air hit us as we stepped outside, a stark contrast to the stifling tension that filled the house. The paramedics carefully loaded Leo into the ambulance, and Sophia settled beside him, holding his tiny hand.

I climbed in after her, taking my place at her side. As the ambulance started moving, I wrapped an arm around Sophia, offering her what little comfort I could. We were moving forward, one step at a time, and that was what mattered.

The journey was far from over. We had a long road ahead to heal and rebuild, but we were no longer alone. Help had arrived, and justice would follow.
