“Calloway Investments.”
I stared at the screen, feeling my pulse quicken. Mrs. Parker leaned closer, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the contents. “Well, Claire,” she murmured, “looks like you’ve stumbled onto something big.”
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. I could almost hear Ryan’s voice in my head, dismissing my skills, believing I had traded my sharpness for domesticity. But here it was—proof that I was still Claire Miller, the woman who knew how to unearth secrets hidden under layers of deceit.
“Are you sure you want to go through with this?” Mrs. Parker asked, her voice steady, but her eyes searching mine.
I nodded, my resolve hardening. “I need to know what they’re hiding. Ryan thought he could just say ‘divorce’ and everything would end neatly. But it won’t. Not like this.”
Mrs. Parker gave me a small, approving nod. “Then we follow the trail. But carefully. Paper trails are only as good as the people they lead to.”
For the next few hours, we worked in silence, piecing together the tangled web that Calloway Investments tried to hide. My son slept peacefully, oblivious to the storm brewing around him.
With each click and scroll, the puzzle became clearer. Hidden accounts, suspicious transactions, and shell companies layered in a way that only someone familiar with financial deception could recognize. It was a tapestry of fraud, and with each thread I pulled, I felt more empowered.
By 9:00 a.m., Mrs. Parker’s kitchen was filled with printed documents and hastily scribbled notes. The sun was fully up, casting a warm light over the chaos that now surrounded us.
“I think we have enough,” I said finally, closing the laptop. “This isn’t just about Ryan anymore. This is bigger. Much bigger.”
Mrs. Parker nodded, her expression grave. “The Calloways have been running this racket for years, and you might have the evidence to bring it all crashing down.”
I felt a strange mix of fear and exhilaration. The old Claire—the one who had once been intimidated by Ryan and his family—might have hesitated. But the new Claire, the one shaped by a sleepless night and a determination to protect her child, was ready.
“What’s the next step?” Mrs. Parker asked.
I took a deep breath. “We need to get this to someone who can do something about it. Someone who isn’t afraid of the Calloways.”
Mrs. Parker’s eyes twinkled with a hint of mischief. “I know just the person.”
As we packed away the documents and prepared to leave the safety of her kitchen, I felt a sense of purpose. I wasn’t just leaving Ryan; I was stepping into a future where my son and I would be free from the Calloways’ shadow.
As we reached the door, Mrs. Parker paused, her hand resting on my shoulder. “Claire, you’re stronger than you know. And whatever comes next, remember, you’re not alone.”
I smiled, grateful for her unwavering support. “Thank you, Mrs. Parker. For everything.”
She nodded, and as I stepped out into the morning light with my son in my arms, I knew this was just the beginning. The story wasn’t over yet.
