“Why?” My voice cut through the silence like a blade. Michael’s eyes flickered to the phone, understanding dawning a moment too late.
“Why would you do this to your own mother?” I asked, each word weighed down with disappointment and disbelief. The room felt heavy, like the air had thickened with all the unsaid things that had been hiding in our family for too long.
Michael opened his mouth, maybe to protest, maybe to justify, but nothing came out. Olivia glanced at him, her face a mix of shock and something darker—fear, perhaps, or guilt. David and Jessica exchanged a look, suddenly aware that their laughter had been a mistake, a miscalculation of the gravity of what they’d been part of.
“I didn’t want to hurt her,” Michael finally muttered, his voice small and defensive. “We just needed her to understand how important this is.”
I shook my head slowly. “You think I’d let you bully your own mother for a bad investment? You think I’d let you do this to the woman who raised you?”
My heart ached as I thought of Sarah lying in the living room, hurt because of our own blood. The same woman who had nursed Michael through every childhood fever and celebrated every achievement, big or small.
“We can talk about this,” David interjected, trying to regain control. His voice was smooth, but there was a tremor in it. I could see it in the way he held his glass a little too tightly.
“We’re beyond talking,” I replied, my gaze never leaving Michael’s face. “The police are on their way.”
The color drained from Michael’s face. “Dad, please,” he started, but I held up a hand to stop him.
“Not another word,” I said firmly. “You made your choice.”
The weight of those words settled in the room. Michael’s face crumpled, and for a moment, I saw the little boy who used to run to me when he was scared. But that little boy was gone, replaced by a man who had let greed and desperation guide him down a path that I couldn’t follow.
When the police arrived, the tension finally broke. Officers moved efficiently, their presence a cold reminder of the consequences that had finally caught up with the kitchen’s occupants. Statements were taken, explanations fumbled through, but Olivia, David, and Jessica were silent, their earlier bravado vanished.
Michael was led away, his eyes downcast. He did not look back as he crossed the threshold of our home, escorted by an officer who had seen this all before.
Once the house was quiet again, I returned to Sarah. Her eyes searched mine when I knelt beside her once more, and I took her hand, squeezing it gently. “It’s over,” I whispered, though I knew the wounds would linger far longer than the evening.
We sat together in silence, the weight of the day pressing in on us. But there was something else there too—a resolve that we would get through this, together, no matter how difficult it might be.
As I helped Sarah to her feet, I realized that this chapter of our lives was not yet over. There was more to face, more to understand, more to heal. But together, we would find our way.
