Caleb closed the door behind me, and the room seemed to shrink. Dr. Park nodded at me, her expression serious but kind.
“Please, take a seat, Maren,” Caleb said, gesturing to a chair. I sat down, my heart racing, as Caleb pulled up a chair beside me. Dr. Park remained standing, her eyes shifting between us.
“Maren, there’s something we need to discuss,” Caleb began, his voice steady. “Your CT scan showed some irregularities, things that shouldn’t be there.”
Ice flooded my veins. “What kind of irregularities?”
Caleb hesitated, and Dr. Park stepped in. “The scan revealed traces of a substance—something that concerns us greatly. It’s a compound that, over time, could cause the symptoms you’ve been experiencing.”
“What are you saying?” I asked, my voice trembling.
Caleb placed a comforting hand on mine. “We suspect you’ve been exposed to a toxin, Maren. Something that didn’t happen by accident.”
The words hung in the air like a storm cloud. My mind spun, trying to process what they were implying. “Do you think someone did this to me on purpose?”
Caleb’s eyes softened, and he nodded slowly. “Yes, and we believe it’s been happening for a while.”
My thoughts immediately turned to Trent. The man I’d trusted for years. The man who was waiting just down the hall. “Are you saying Trent poisoned me?” I whispered, barely believing the words myself.
Dr. Park exchanged a glance with Caleb before speaking. “We can’t make any accusations yet, but we need to investigate further. This is a serious matter.”
“But how… why would he do this?” I stammered, tears welling up in my eyes.
Caleb squeezed my hand. “I don’t have all the answers, Maren, but I promise we’ll get to the bottom of this.”
Dr. Park added, “We need to keep you safe while we conduct our investigation. With your permission, we’d like to notify the authorities.”
I nodded numbly, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on my shoulders. “What should I do now?”
“For now, stay here at the hospital while we arrange everything,” Caleb said. “We’ll make sure you’re protected.”
The room was silent for a moment, the gravity of the situation sinking in. I couldn’t believe this was happening. The husband I thought I knew, the life I thought I had—it was all unraveling before me.
“You’ll need support through this, Maren. Is there anyone you can call? Friends or family?” Dr. Park asked gently.
My mind went to my close friend, Sarah. “I can call Sarah,” I said, my voice shaky. “She’ll know what to do.”
Caleb nodded approvingly. “Good. We’ll make sure she’s allowed to visit.”
As I sat there, my world spinning out of control, one thing was clear—this was far from over. I needed answers, and I needed to uncover the truth hidden beneath years of deception.
Caleb stood, offering a reassuring smile. “We’re with you every step of the way,” he promised.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “Thank you, Caleb.”
As I left the office, heading back to face Trent and the uncertain path ahead, a flicker of determination sparked within me. I was ready to face whatever came next.
