My son sent me a message: “Mom, I know you just bought us the house,

A week after I sent the letters, I found myself back at my kitchen table, sipping tea and waiting for the inevitable phone call. My heart ached with a mix of anger and sadness, but I knew this was something I had to do. I couldn’t keep being the person everyone turned to only when they needed something. I deserved better.

The phone rang late in the afternoon. I picked it up, took a deep breath, and answered with a calm voice, “Hello?”

On the other end, Danny’s voice was a mix of disbelief and frustration. “Mom, what is this? You’re taking the house back? And you want money from us? We don’t have that kind of cash!”

I listened patiently as he went on about how difficult things were, how they had just started getting settled, and how unfair this all seemed to him. When he finally paused, I spoke softly but firmly.

“Danny, I love you, but you need to understand something. I’ve always been there for you. I’ve given you everything I could, and I did it because I love you. But love isn’t about being taken for granted. You and Sarah made it clear I wasn’t welcome, not just at Thanksgiving but in your lives as you started this new chapter. That hurt me deeply.”

“But, Mom—” he started, but I gently interrupted.

“No, Danny, listen. I didn’t come to this decision lightly. I’ve spent countless nights thinking it over. I want you to be happy, but I also need to be respected. It’s time for you and Sarah to stand on your own feet. I won’t leave you without help, but things need to change.”

The line was silent for a moment. I could hear him breathing, processing everything I had said. Finally, he spoke again, his voice softer.

“I’m sorry, Mom. I didn’t realize how you felt. We’ll find a way to make it work. I promise we’ll pay you back, and we’ll figure this out.”

I smiled, a small tear escaping down my cheek. “Thank you, Danny. That’s all I needed to hear. We can work through this, but it has to be different from now on.”

After we hung up, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. It wasn’t going to be easy, but it was a step toward a healthier relationship with my son.

I decided to focus on myself for a while. I enrolled in a painting class, something I’d always wanted to do but never had time for. I reconnected with old friends and even planned a small vacation for myself. It was time to rediscover the Margaret who wasn’t just a mother, but a person with dreams and passions.

As Thanksgiving approached, I realized this year would be different. It wouldn’t be about grand gestures or expensive gifts. It would be about spending time with people who genuinely cared for me and respected me.

And for those who want to know what happens next, how Danny and I rebuild our relationship, and the true ending of this story, stay tuned. 📖
