Adrian’s face turned ashen the moment I ended the call. He had always assumed I was insignificant beyond my role as his trophy wife. The truth was a reality he had never bothered to explore, and now it was unraveling before him. Vanessa’s confident smirk faded slightly as she watched Adrian’s reaction, unsure of what was happening.
“Your father?” Adrian stammered, his voice laced with disbelief. “You never mentioned him.”
I slowly got to my feet, each movement sending a fresh wave of pain through my body, but I refused to let it show. “You never asked,” I replied simply, brushing off the dust and blood from my dress.
Vanessa frowned, glancing between Adrian and me. “Adrian, what is she talking about?” she demanded, her composure slipping.
Adrian didn’t respond. His mind was racing, trying to process the implications of my words. He looked at me, his eyes a mix of anger and confusion, as if seeing me for the first time. The reality of my father’s influence was sinking in, and for a moment, I almost felt sorry for him. Almost.
The seconds stretched on, pregnant with tension, until the silence was shattered by the shrill ring of Adrian’s phone. He hesitated before answering, his hand trembling ever so slightly. The color drained from his face as he listened to the voice on the other end.
Vanessa leaned closer, trying to decipher the conversation. “Adrian, what’s going on?” she pressed, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and frustration.
He ended the call abruptly, his expression one of utter defeat. “That was the bank,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Our accounts… everything’s frozen.”
Vanessa gasped, genuine panic flashing in her eyes. “What do you mean, frozen? Fix it, Adrian!”
He shook his head, his bravado crumbling. “They said it’s a directive from… her father.”
I stood there, watching the two of them unravel, the power dynamic shifting with every passing second. It was as though the air had shifted, and suddenly, I was no longer the victim in this twisted narrative. I was the orchestrator.
“You’ll regret this,” Adrian hissed, but his words held no weight. They were the desperate threats of a man who had lost control.
Vanessa looked at me, her earlier arrogance replaced by desperation. “Please, this can’t be happening. There must be something we can do.”
I took a step closer, meeting her gaze with unwavering resolve. “You made your choices, Vanessa. You both did. Now you have to live with them.”
With that, I turned and walked away, leaving them standing in the grand hall, shadows of their former selves. Each step was painful, but it was a pain I could endure. Because each step also brought me closer to freedom, closer to reclaiming my life.
As I exited the estate, the cool night air embraced me, soothing my burning wounds. I knew there would be challenges ahead, but I was ready. I had a newfound strength, a resolve that would guide me through whatever came next.
And as I stepped into the waiting car, a sense of calm washed over me. This was just the beginning. The story wasn’t over yet—far from it. There was still so much more to tell.
