As I watched Catherine’s face go pale, I knew this was the moment everything shifted. The authority she thought she had crumbled in an instant. Her fingers trembled as she reached for the pearls around her neck, as if they were the last thing holding her together.
“Eleanor, listen,” she started, her voice now a shaky whisper. “We can work something out. There’s no need for this to get ugly.”
I held her gaze, unwavering. “You should have thought of that before you tried to turn my family’s company into your playground.”
Around the table, the others sat in stunned silence. Anthony’s brother, Samuel, looked down at his phone, disbelieving. Susan, his sister, glanced around the room, her expression a mixture of fear and anger.
Catherine tried again. “I’ll talk to Anthony. We can fix this.”
I shook my head. “There’s nothing left to fix. This isn’t a negotiation, Catherine. This is a consequence.”
Leonard and his security team stepped forward. “If everyone would please gather their belongings, we’ll escort you out,” he announced, his voice calm but firm.
There was shuffling, whispered protests, and the scraping of chairs as my ex-in-laws reluctantly rose to leave. As they filed out, I caught Catherine’s eye one last time. Her glare was venomous, but I didn’t flinch. This was a battle she had lost, and she knew it.
Arthur closed the folder and handed it to me. “Anything else, Miss Prescott?” he asked, a hint of satisfaction in his voice.
I took a deep breath, feeling lighter than I had in years. “Not for now, Arthur. Let’s make sure Prescott Holdings runs smoothly from here on.”
He nodded, and with a small, respectful smile, he left the boardroom.
I stood there for a moment, absorbing the reality of what had just happened. I was finally free—from Anthony, from his conniving family, and from the shadows they tried to cast over the company that bore my name.
Stepping out of the boardroom, I was greeted with the familiar sights and sounds of the bustling office. Faces turned, some curious, some relieved. The tension of the morning had lifted, leaving behind an air of renewed purpose.
The elevator ride down felt different this time. I was no longer weighed down by the burdens of the past. As the doors opened to the lobby, I was met with nods of respect and a few encouraging smiles.
Outside, the sun was setting, painting the Manhattan skyline in hues of gold and orange. I took a deep breath, feeling the cool evening breeze on my skin.
My phone buzzed. A message from my father: “Proud of you.”
I smiled, feeling the warmth of those words wrap around me. I knew this wasn’t the end. There would be more challenges, more battles to fight. But for the first time in a long time, I felt ready to face whatever came next.
As I walked down the street, leaving Prescott Holdings behind for the day, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation. This was only the beginning. There was so much more to come.
