My sister called me at midnight and whispered, “Turn off every light. Go to the

I clung to the attic floor, my heart thundering in my chest. What was happening? Was this a nightmare? My husband, the man I shared my life with, was standing in our home with a stranger and fake passports.

“Is it ready?” the stranger asked Caleb.

“Yes,” Caleb replied, his voice steady. “We need to leave by morning.”

“Does she suspect?”

“No. Mara’s call was unexpected, but she won’t figure it out in time.”

The stranger nodded. “We’ll be in touch. You know what to do.”

Caleb nodded, and they moved out of my line of sight. I could hear their footsteps fading, the door closing behind them. Silence enveloped the house again.

I sat in the dark attic, my mind reeling. Why did Caleb have fake passports? What was he planning? And why was Mara involved?

I needed answers, and the only person I could trust was Mara. I turned my phone back on, the screen casting a small light in the dim attic. I texted Mara: “I saw Caleb. He’s not alone. What is going on?”

The seconds dragged on like hours before my phone vibrated with a reply. “I’m on my way. Stay hidden.”

I took a shaky breath, trying to calm my racing heart. I wrapped my arms around my knees and waited, my ears straining for any sound from below. The night stretched endlessly, but finally, I heard a soft knock on the attic door.

“Elise, it’s me.” Mara’s voice was a balm to my frayed nerves.

I unlocked the door, and Mara slipped inside, closing it quietly behind her. She looked tense, her eyes scanning the dark space. “Are you okay?”

I nodded, though nothing felt okay. “What’s going on?”

Mara hesitated, her expression somber. “Caleb isn’t who he says he is. He’s been under investigation for months.”

My mind was a whirl of confusion. “Investigation? For what?”

“Espionage,” Mara said softly. “He’s been selling government secrets.”

I felt the floor tilt beneath me. “No, that’s impossible. Caleb loves us. He wouldn’t—”

“He’s been playing a role, Elise. The passports are part of his escape plan. Tonight was supposed to be the night he disappeared with you and Noah.”

My heart sank. “And the stranger?”

“A contact. They were working together.”

I felt tears well up, disbelief mingling with betrayal. The man I loved, the father of my child, was a stranger. “What do I do?”

Mara put a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “You’re safe now. We’ll make sure you and Noah are protected. Caleb won’t get away with this.”

I nodded, still struggling to process everything. “Thank you, Mara.”

She squeezed my shoulder. “We’ll get through this. But there’s more you need to know.”

I looked at her, questions swirling in my mind. “What do you mean?”

Mara glanced at the attic door, her expression unreadable. “I can’t say here. But we’ll talk soon.”

I nodded, though I felt far from reassured. My life had turned upside down, and I didn’t know what the future held.

As Mara led me out of the attic, I knew this was just the beginning. My journey to uncover the truth had only started, and there were more secrets to uncover. I would have to be brave for Noah, for myself, and for whatever lay ahead.
