“Why didn’t you tell me?” Lauren’s voice trembled, her confidence fading as she glanced between our parents and me.
Mom lowered her eyes, her perfect facade finally shattered. “It was… complicated,” she muttered, unable to maintain her usual authoritative tone.
“Complicated?” Lauren shot back, incredulous. “You let me sit here and criticize Jenna, believing she never helped, while she’s been secretly paying the mortgage?”
Dad cleared his throat, trying to regain control. “We didn’t want to burden you with the details. You have your own family and responsibilities.”
“Details?” I couldn’t help but chuckle, though the sound was bitter. “You mean the part where you let everyone think I was the selfish one?”
Lauren turned to Dererick, but he was suddenly very interested in his plate. Tyler, sensing the tension, wisely kept silent.
“Let’s not ruin dinner over this,” Mom said weakly, trying to salvage the evening.
“The dinner was ruined the moment you decided to ambush me,” I retorted, finally feeling a sense of liberation. “All my life, I’ve been expected to stay in the background, to be quiet and compliant, while you played favorites. But I’ve had enough.”
Aunt Patricia, who had been unusually quiet, finally spoke up. “Seems to me, Jenna’s done more than her part. Maybe it’s time everyone appreciates that.”
Lauren looked at me, her expression softer now. “Jenna, I didn’t know. If I had…” She trailed off, struggling to find the right words.
“It doesn’t matter now,” I said, standing up. “I don’t expect an apology. I’m just done pretending everything is okay.”
With that, I picked up my things and walked out, leaving behind the stunned silence. The chill of the night air was a relief after the stifling tension of the dining room.
As I drove home, I felt a strange mix of emotions—anger, betrayal, and a surprising amount of relief. I had stood up for myself, and it felt good. There was no going back now.
