As Dr. Harris began his examination, I noticed his eyes occasionally flicking towards Daniel. It was a subtle glance, but it was there. I tried to focus on Lily, holding her hand and reassuring her as Dr. Harris gently checked her teeth. He found the problem quickly: a small cavity that would need a filling. He explained the procedure to Lily, using simple words to make sure she understood and wasn’t scared.
While he spoke, I watched him closely. There was a tension in his shoulders, and his eyes kept darting to Daniel, who was now pretending to read a poster about oral hygiene on the wall. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
Finally, Dr. Harris asked Daniel to step outside for a moment so he could have a private word with me, citing it as standard procedure to discuss any concerns with parents separately. Daniel hesitated, his expression unreadable, but eventually nodded and left the room.
Once Daniel was gone, Dr. Harris’s demeanor changed. He looked at me seriously and leaned in closer. “I don’t mean to alarm you,” he said quietly, “but I have to give you something. I found it under the examination chair last week and didn’t realize its significance until today.” He slipped a folded piece of paper into my hand. “Please read it when you’re alone.”
With a silent nod, I slipped the paper into my coat pocket, feeling my heart pound. We completed the appointment, and Daniel rejoined us, his face neutral as we scheduled the next visit for Lily’s filling. He didn’t ask about the conversation I had with Dr. Harris, and I didn’t volunteer any information.
When we got home, I waited until Daniel was in the shower before taking out the note. As I read it, my hands trembled. The note wasn’t long, but it was enough to make my blood run cold. It was a warning.
“Trust your instincts. Get help if you need it.”
That night, after putting Lily to bed, I told Daniel I needed to run an errand. Instead, I drove straight to the police station. The officer I spoke to listened carefully as I explained everything: the note, Lily’s behavior, and my growing fears. They assured me they would look into it discreetly and advised me to stay vigilant.
Returning home, I felt a mix of relief and dread. I didn’t know what would come next, but I was determined to protect my daughter at all costs. As I climbed into bed, Daniel asked if everything was okay. I forced a smile and nodded, hiding my fear under a facade of calm.
The next few days passed in a blur. I was constantly on edge, watching Daniel closely and looking for any sign that he might know about my visit to the police. I felt like I was living in a state of constant tension, never sure what the next moment would bring.
In the back of my mind, I knew this was far from over. There were questions that needed answers, and I was determined to find out the truth, no matter what it took.
